Purpose of Establishment
The primary purpose of establishing the Jincheon Market, which was newly opened in 1976, was to maintain the tradition of ‘five-day’ market whose origin dates back to the period of Chosun Dynasty and to have street vendors sell basic necessities, including agricultural and industrial products, to local residents.
Market Overview
Jincheon Jeonggi Market is held in the vicinity of Backgokcheon (stream) waterfront under the Jincheon Grand Bridge and the open space in the east of downtown Jincheon. On the day of the market you will see a lot of peddlers from a long distance selling a wide variety of agricultural and livestock products, including seasonal wild plants obtained by countryside dwellers from fields and mountains, Korean native chickens, rabbits and puppies.
With the rapid development of living standards and transportation since the 1960s, traditional markets are gradually disappearing but Jincheon Jeonggi Market retains its vigor and liveliness with an estimated 300 to 400 merchants and up to 5,000 daily visitors crowding local folk restaurants and eateries among the various spots in the marketplace.
The market has served not only as a venue for exchanging products and services but also as a place for exchanging news and information between local residents and a place for traditional festive events. In particular, the peak season in the run-up to traditional holidays attracts even local residents from surrounding cities and districts as well, bringing back the spirit and atmosphere of traditional markets of the old days.
